Bacolod City, June 18, 2024 – Angela Keziah Espinosa, Editor-in-Chief of The Ripples, the official college student publication, has won the Negros Press Club Editorial Writing Competition in the college-level category. The announcement was made during Bacolod City’s 86th Charter Anniversary celebrations.
Espinosa expressed her surprise and happiness at the victory, noting the rigorous guidelines and criteria for the competition. “I was in disbelief that I won, given the guidelines and criteria for judging were very extensive. I was really surprised and, of course, happy,” she said.
A strong advocate for press freedom, Espinosa participated in the competition as part of Bacolod Press Freedom Day Celebration. She prepared by immersing herself in current news and reading other editorial articles for reference.
Espinosa credited her role as Editor in Chief and her mentor, Ms. Zilla Rozzi Javier, for influencing her writing approach. “I write strongly about things, even if sometimes I know I will probably be opposed by many. But I really make sure to get my point straight,” she explained.
Her winning editorial focused on the Israeli-Hamas conflict and the role of the youth. She emphasized the responsibility of the youth in disseminating information, understanding historical contexts, and being proactive in media presence to combat misinformation.
Espinosa advised aspiring writers to write simply and assertively, ensuring their content is valuable and straightforward. “Your content must be full of value, not random words that will just crowd your points,” she said.
