Alfredo G. Barcelona, chairman of the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., called on academic institutions to sustain learning that responds to real-world needs as he delivered his message during the inauguration of the A. G. Barcelona Center for Advanced Studies at La Consolacion College Bacolod on Feb. 6.
Barcelona emphasized that education remains the most reliable investment communities can make, underscoring the role of institutions in preparing learners for rapid changes driven by technology, industry demands, and social transformation. He said the newly inaugurated center represents a shared belief that learning should be continuous, practical, and closely connected to workforce and community priorities.
He noted that the center, housed in a renovated facility, is intended to support short-term learning programs and emerging workforce needs, particularly through flexible and targeted training. According to Barcelona, such initiatives provide timely responses to evolving economic realities and help learners remain competitive.
Barcelona also highlighted the importance of educators and institutions in translating physical spaces into meaningful learning environments. He encouraged faculty and administrators to use the center as a venue where skills are strengthened, ideas are tested, and opportunities are created—not only for the College community but for the wider public.
The A. G. Barcelona Center for Advanced Studies is envisioned as a hub for micro-credentialing, professional development, and collaborative engagements that align education with industry and community development goals.
