Bearing the Cross in a Digital World: Mass of the Holy Spirit Opens the College Year at LCC Bacolod

La Consolacion College Bacolod opened the academic year for college students with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit held on August 1 at the Quadrangle, bringing the entire college community together in prayer and reflection. The celebration was presided over by Rev. Fr. Carl Anthony Quinto, an alumnus of LCC Bacolod, whose heartfelt homily challenged students to embrace the wisdom of sacrifice in an age of ease and instant gratification.

Fr. Quinto drew from the Gospel’s call, “Take up your cross and follow Jesus,” and spoke directly to the young generation who, he observed, are growing up in a world shaped by convenience, technology, and artificial intelligence. “Sacrifice is not a punishment,” he reminded them, “but a process of forming character, deepening empathy, and anchoring one’s life in something greater than oneself.”

His message offered a timely invitation for students to see the new academic year not just as a pursuit of grades and goals, but as a sacred journey—one that asks for discipline, service, and purpose.

After the Eucharistic celebration, the newly elected Supreme Student Government (SSG) officers were inducted, marking the start of their leadership journey for Academic Year 2025–2026. The rite was followed by a special blessing for all students, asking for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, wisdom, and strength throughout the year.

Ms. Ma. Girlie Abad, Head of the Center for Spirituality and Integral Formation, gave the closing message of gratitude. She thanked the students, faculty, and staff for their presence and active participation, and assured everyone that the spiritual life of the college will continue to thrive. “We have more activities in store to nourish your spirit, build community, and keep Christ at the center of our learning,” she shared.

As the sun rose over the Quadrangle and activities resumed, the students of LCC Bacolod left the altar with a renewed sense of mission—called to rise above comfort, and to live lives that matter, with faith and sacrifice as their guide.
