Faculty members of La Consolacion College Bacolod moved from basic concepts to statistical decision-making on the second day of the training “From Fear to Fluency: Practical Statistics for Faculty Researchers” on Tuesday, June 23.
The three-day training, facilitated by Rejay Y. Alvarado, head of the Research and Creative Works Office and institutional statistician, is designed to help faculty researchers use statistics with greater confidence and accuracy.
Day 2 focused on helping participants decide which statistical tools fit specific research questions, data types and assumptions. Faculty members from the School of Sciences, Liberal Arts and Teacher Education and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management took part in the session.

The discussions covered descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, as well as the preparation of APA-style descriptive tables.
A key part of the session centered on assumption testing, including normality testing, homogeneity of variances, and the interpretation of Shapiro-Wilk and Levene’s tests. These procedures help researchers determine whether to use parametric or nonparametric tests in analyzing their data.
Participants were also introduced to statistical tools for comparing groups, including the independent samples t-test, Welch t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, Welch ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis H test.
The session emphasized that sound research is not only about producing numbers but also about choosing the right method, interpreting results correctly and reporting findings clearly.
Through the training, LCCB aims to strengthen faculty research by helping teachers make informed statistical choices in institutional research, classroom-based studies and discipline-specific investigations.
The final day will focus on correlation analysis, reliability testing, APA-style statistical reporting and a faculty research clinic where participants may consult on their own research questions, datasets and statistical treatments.
