BASIC EDUCATION TEACHERS DEEPEN GENDER SENSITIVITY AMID RAIN-RELATED CLASS SUSPENSION

La Consolacion College Bacolod President Sr. Flolyn S. Catungal, OSA, led a gender sensitivity seminar-workshop for Integrated Basic Education Department teachers Friday, July 24, at the school’s Audio Visual Center.

The professional development activity proceeded while classes in all levels in Bacolod City were suspended following a yellow heavy rainfall warning issued by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

During the session, Catungal discussed the importance of recognizing gender-based assumptions, using inclusive language and promoting respect for the dignity and experiences of every member of the school community.

She also facilitated workshop activities that encouraged teachers to examine common classroom situations, reflect on unconscious biases and identify more gender-responsive approaches to teaching, communication and student support.

The seminar-workshop emphasized that gender sensitivity goes beyond awareness and must be reflected in teachers’ daily interactions, instructional practices and responses to learners’ needs.

Teacher-participant Roseny Valiao said the activity helped educators become more conscious of how their words and actions could influence students.

“The workshop reminded us that even ordinary classroom practices and expressions can affect how learners see themselves and others,” Valiao said. “As teachers, we have a responsibility to create a learning environment where every student feels respected, included and safe.”

The activity formed part of the institution’s continuing professional development initiatives for teachers and its efforts to foster an inclusive, respectful and learner-centered school environment.
