La Consolacion College Bacolod recently participated in the Orientation and Dissemination of the Portable Courseware on Fighting Information Disorder on Social Media: A Regional Workshop. Held on June 30, 2023, at Central Philippine University, this workshop aimed to equip educators and students with the necessary tools and knowledge to combat the spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
Representing La Consolacion College Bacolod were Mr. Adryan Valiao, Marketing Staff, and two BS in Information Technology students, Jann Mari Poblador and Rafael Jose Villa. Notably, Poblador and Villa also hold positions as the Governor and Vice Governor, respectively, of the School of Business & Information Technology.
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome message from Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, President of Central Philippine University. Dr. Dave E. Marcial, Director of Silliman Online University Learning, then presented the rationale and overview of the workshop. The opening ceremony set the stage for the subsequent breakout workshops, which took place at the Mary Thomas Computer Laboratories. The participants were divided into two sessions: one for educators and another for students.
The regional workshop placed a strong emphasis on the six modules of the portable courseware, which aimed to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical strategies in fighting information disorder:
Module 1: Misinformation, Disinformation, Malinformation, and Social Media
Module 2: Deciphering the Architects of Networked Disinformation
Module 3: Trolls and Deep Fake Technology
Module 4: Fact-Checking Process, Tools, and Platforms
Module 5: Becoming a Responsible Social Media User
Module 6: Infographics, Video, Blog, Actional Planning to Fight Information Disorder
Organized by the Office of the Silliman Online University Learning (SOUL), this workshop formed part of the project titled “Development of an Open Courseware with Animation & Gamification on Fighting Information Disorder on Social Media.” The initiative received funding from the United Board for Christian Higher Education Institutions in Asia, highlighting its importance and relevance in addressing the issue of information disorder in today’s digital landscape.
Representatives from La Consolacion College Bacolod expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to attend the workshop and shared their intention to disseminate the learnings and courseware to the faculty and students of LCC Bacolod. By doing so, they aim to raise awareness and empower the college community to take an active role in combating information disorder on social media.
The workshop garnered participation from over 20 higher education institutions in the Visayas region, showcasing the collective effort of these institutions to combat misinformation. Looking ahead, the workshop is scheduled to have its Luzon leg at the University of the Cordilleras and the Mindanao leg at Davao Central College, ensuring a wider reach and impact across the country.
The Orientation and Dissemination of the Portable Courseware on Fighting Information Disorder on Social Media: A Regional Workshop served as an important platform for educators and students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complex digital landscape responsibly. La Consolacion College Bacolod’s active participation and dedication to this cause exemplify her commitment to fostering an informed and critical society, capable of discerning accurate information from misleading content in the age of social media.
