Second Monitoring of LCCB’s Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy Highlights Ongoing Challenges and Opportunities

The LCCB Institutional Environmental Advocacy Program (IEAP) and the LCCB Supreme Student Government (SSG) Committee on Regenerative Development recently conducted the second monitoring of the Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy on February 2, 2024. This monitoring session shed light on both progress and ongoing challenges in the institution’s journey towards sustainability.

While no concessionaires were found in violation of the major criteria outlined in the policy, such as the use of reusable or eco-friendly materials for takeaway containers, beverage cups, straws, and utensils, there are notable challenges regarding the minor criteria.

One of the significant challenges identified during the evaluation is the continued selling of commercial products packaged in plastic wrappers, including biscuits, chips, and snacks. This practice poses a dilemma as viable alternatives to these plastic-wrapped products are currently scarce in the Philippine market.

It’s essential to recognize that not meeting the minor criteria does not constitute a violation. Instead, it underscores the broader challenge faced in completely phasing out single-use plastics (SUPs) due to the lack of available alternatives for certain products.

This revelation highlights the complexity of implementing sustainability initiatives and emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts between stakeholders, including concessionaires, regulatory bodies, and suppliers, to address existing gaps in the market.

Moving forward, the LCCB IEAP and the LCCB SSG Committee on Regenerative Development remain committed to finding innovative solutions to overcome these challenges. Engagement with concessionaires, exploration of alternative packaging options, and advocacy for the development of sustainable alternatives in the Philippine market are among the strategies being considered.

Despite the challenges encountered, the ongoing monitoring and evaluation process signify LCCB’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges head-on, the institution reaffirms its dedication to fostering a sustainable and eco-conscious environment for the benefit of its community and future generations./AV #lccbIEAP #lccbSSG #GreenerLCCB
